My teenager started working. How do taxes work for them?

Filing at 15, family income, and what it does not affect.

Asked

Teenager started working (15). How do taxes work for them. Do they pay taxes. ? Do they have to do the income tax stuff ? Does it count against family income when we do ours? Can I still write off overnight summer camps for that tax deduction For childcare as kid under 16? Any other info?

Clint’s answer

Yes, they would likely have taxes deducted off of their cheque, but the chances of the CRA keeping those tax payments after the teenager files taxes for that year are statistically low.

This answers the first two questions. Yes they are eligible to pay taxes, and yes they should file their income tax. It does count against family income which will only impact the CCB. And yes you can still use applicable camps.

Update, October 2026: A teenager's own income does not affect the Canada child benefit. The CCB is based on adjusted family net income, which counts only the parents' net income.
