Resources Ask Clint Family & Dependants

I am paying my kid's university tuition. Is any of it deductible?

Tuition credits, transfers, and what room and board does not do.

Asked

if parent is paying university tuition and expenses for kid, are there any tax deductions for either tuition or room and board?

Clint’s answer

Students can transfer up to $5,000 federal and $5,000 provincial educational credits in the year in which they received the credits.

Medical expenses can be deducted if the student is also a dependant.

Room and board is not a deductible expense, however moving costs would be if the move was 40km closer to the school or institution than the original address.
