Resources Ask Clint Family & Dependants

My son turned 18 last January. Can I still claim him?

Age cut-offs and what the year of turning 18 looks like.

Asked

My son turned 18 last January, can I claim him on my taxes for all of 2023

Clint’s answer

You may be entitled to certain benefits, like CCB until they are 18, but claiming children as a dependent on taxes is no longer a thing unless you are a single parent, and even at that you can only claim 1 child, and only one parent can claim the child...

I believe for dependant purposes, it's the age of the child on Dec 31, for the tax year you are filing for.
