Resources Ask Clint Medical & Disability

We drive 175 km for my daughter's therapy. Is the gas claimable?

Travel for services that are not available locally.

Asked

My city does not offer the services that my daughter needs (speech, OT). We are driving 175kms regularly so that she can access these services. Can I claim the gas as medical expenses on my income tax?

Clint’s answer

Hi Jess. In short, yes you can.

There is a bit of a method to how medical expenses are deducted, but the mileage can be added to the medical expenses at the prescribed rate per km that can be found on the CRA site.
