Resources Ask Clint Dealing with the CRA

I picked the wrong option when paying online. Will they fix it?

Misapplied payments and how to get them moved.

Asked

What happens if you choose the wrong option when paying taxes on line? Will they eventually get it sorted out on their end? I tried to call CRA today but the wait was three hours.

Clint’s answer

Many things can happen, but the most likely is that it eventually gets allocated correctly... more and more I'm losing faith in correctness with the CRA, however...

Why they have so many payment options is beyond me, especially when it can be incorrectly allocated.

It could sit in an instalment for a future year's tax, it could sit in an abyss of overpayment until you request it be refunded or reallocated.

Sometimes they will refund it unannounced.

Best to call, get the agent name and id of who you're speaking with, ask them to acknowledge the payment and date of receipt so it's on record, then ask if they can put it in the right place... Hopefully they can.

Date the convo with the agent name and id or it never happened.
