Our T5 is in my husband's name. Can we split it?

Joint accounts, and who reports the interest.

Asked

Filling out my taxes and now on to T5. This is a Type 2 claim (combined account with spouse). The T5 is under my husband's sin number, so I am claiming it under his name. Can I split it 50% (Enter percentage of slip to claim on your spouse's tax return (if applicable)) or is that already taken into account when putting the recipient type in?

Great question!

Technically the income on this should be split at the prorated amount each of you have invested.

For example if you deposited $25,000 and your husband deposited $75,000, and the investment made $1,000, you would claim $250 and your husband would claim $750 if you're going by the book.
